Inspired by Tuscan Textures – The Pavilion by Georgie Shepherd Interior Design

Stirred by a love of earthy tones and natural textures, The Pavilion acts as an extension to an existing established home, offering additional social space separate from the main dwelling. Georgie Shepherd Interior Design takes cues from the original home and influential muses to create a space of soft organic qualities.

As its own standalone space, The Pavilion is imagined as a complementary addition to a pre-existing established home to accommodate extended social gatherings. While still within the same site, the structure is seen as an extension of sorts to house the owner’s large family and allow for a spill over or allow for flexibility in function. Located in South Australia, inspiration is taken from the home’s original features and character and reinterpreted into the new, while also taking influence from abroad. Lovers of the Mediterranean aesthetic, the clients shared a fondness with the textural variation and natural organic lines found in Italian Tuscan towns and wanted to bring elements of these into their home. Georgie Shepherd Interior Design, together with Proske Architects, combines a muted and natural approach to bring a palette of neutrals and organic lines together on site.

Lovers of the Mediterranean aesthetic, the clients shared a fondness with the textural variation and natural organic lines found in Italian Tuscan towns and wanted to bring elements of these into their home.

Built by Urban Habitats, The Pavilion shares its site with the contemporary and sculpted lines of the main dwelling of the home, where a modern approach has been adopted. As a complementary addition, the new space acts as an extension of tones and openness, while also being a space to evoke a sense of escape. Taking cues from a more softened and casual approach, the resulting space offers a less formal arrangement, with integrated seating and storage throughout. By concentrating on texture and tonality instead of injecting colour to add variation, moments of subtleties and nuanced gestures are created that will not date over time.

Softening the space is the combination of polished plaster walls, the use of limestone and concrete on horizontal surfaces and the cooling effect of the stone as flooring throughout. The composition of elements, while softened through layers of textiles, has a robust and lasting quality that is mainly an effect of their weightiness. Refined metal elements, such as the aged brass hardware and custom arched doorway, create added character and aid in defining the space with its own purpose and identity.
